Avid Project Management was engaged as superintendent for the civil works phase of a seniors living development in New South Wales. The appointment came after design completion and contract award, with construction already underway.
Our approach
While contracted solely for superintendent duties, we took a proactive approach to resolve the cost and schedule challenges. The team facilitated an on-site meeting with the contractor and geotechnical engineer to:
- Assess the actual site conditions
- Review the required works under the original design
- Explore alternative construction methodologies
- Evaluate cost and time implications of each option
The solution
Through collaborative problem-solving, the team developed an alternative foundation approach. Instead of continuing with conventional filling methods, the solution involved introducing a cobble bridging layer to build up the road foundations.
This redesigned methodology:
- Eliminated the need for extensive dewatering
- Reduced filling requirements
- Maintained structural integrity of the road base
- Achieved the design intent with modified construction techniques
